QATestingTools is designed to educate and help qualified partners on QA resources and software testing tools, who are able to solve production challenges by advising on and delivering the best solution with the lowest amount of risk. We are doing profile articles and reviews on top testing tools, and today we have selected Ranorex to be our article object.
Ranorex, a well-known tool, is mainly used for GUI testing in windows surrounding. But next to desktop app testing, Ranorex also supports automated testing of mobile and web-based applications. It is not only a Testing tool, but is also a testing framework, which supports script-less way of working but also has coding abilities. Both working methodology options give the tester many options, from setting fast test cases with low experience to top professional QA engineering, making coverage testing pushed to its maximum ability.
What makes a tool, a good tool? We need a testing tool that provides us with fast and intuitive means to set test cases for most used functions in our SUT, but on the same hand gives us extra ability to create a robust regression testing. Ranorex is doing them both.
Ranorex supports testing on dot.Net, WPF, Java, Win32 and MFC object and even many other 3rd party controls that run on windows system. More than that, it supports web testing opening possibilities for cross browser testing as well as cross platform mobile app testing. This wide range of object recognition is not something that comes simple, and not exists in many GUI testing tools.
Good GUI functional testing should support reliable object recognition with ability to Record & Play test cases. Ranorex support image based recording as addition to the standard object recording, what makes it most powerful on cases that the SUT application, include controls that are hard to get.
Finally, I found something, which is unique to Ranorex. It has the ability to package a test case into EXE file, making it easy to integrate and activate within some other tools that are in the local Testing Lab. Even sharing the generated test report with the integrating system is easy, based on the open standards Ranorex is relying on. It can even be a part of your Integration and Gating testing after every build. The ability to create and activate your own hybrid tests can be timesaving for QA and R&D.
